Higher Welfare Points

Points are awarded if your entire supply of a given product is produced to higher animal welfare standards. An equal number of points are awarded for not using the product at all. Higher welfare schemes are*:

⦿ Organic

⦿ RSPCA Assured

⦿ Pasture for Life

⦿ Wild caught (in the case of game only).

Free range eggs earn no points since this is required at all levels.

What this might look like in practice

Note that there are several different combinations to achieve the points totals required. Remember that points are awarded both for serving higher welfare, and not serving a product at all. The examples below are just a guide to help you understand the sourcing required at each level.

Bronze

Core Welfare only (0/64)

- All meat is farm assured; all eggs are free range; all wild fish is MSC Cert.

Silver

Core Welfare + 45/64

- All meat is farm assured; all eggs are free range; all wild fish is MSC Cert.

- Of the 9 listed meats, a Silver award holder might be serving 7 of these to higher welfare, or not serving them at all. Additionally, they might not be serving any game at all, whilst serving higher welfare farmed fish. Of the 7 egg & dairy products listed, 2 of these might be served to higher welfare.

- Don’t forget, the same number of points are awarded for not serving a product as serving the same product to higher welfare.

Gold

Core Welfare + 58/64

- All meat is farm assured; all eggs are free range; all wild fish is MSC Cert.

- Of the 9 listed meats, a Gold award holder might be serving all of these to higher welfare, or not serving them at all. Additionally, they might not be serving any game at all, whilst serving higher welfare farmed fish. Of the 7 egg & dairy products listed, 3 of these might be served to higher welfare.

- Don’t forget, the same number of points are awarded for not serving a product as serving the same product to higher welfare.

Green

Core Welfare + 10/13

- No meat or fish products are served at all. All eggs are free range.

- Of the 7 egg & dairy products listed, 5 of these might be served to higher welfare or not served at all.

- Don’t forget, the same number of points are awarded for not serving a product as serving the same product to higher welfare.

* So as not to exclude small-scale local farming, meat sourced through local supply chains that uphold comparable principles of welfare and sustainability as the recognised accreditation schemes are accepted under the award, subject to the discretion of the Flexitarian Award team. For example, in these cases we may consider a farm's claim to produce 'free range' meat. For more information on 'free range', see our animal welfare page.
